Self Care. Why it's important

Let's talk self care and why it is so valuable and important for us Mamas; and why does it always seem we never have the time for it?! I know, I know... I majorly fell into this category too and was not taking time for myself (like at all). I mean I would be so tired at night I would plop on the couch the second I put my son to sleep, watch I don't know an hour and a half worth of TV or social media scrolling and then get up and tell myself I'm too tired to wash my face; so I'd go to bed without doing it. Now ehh backup! If we have time to scroll social media and binge watch TV; we have at least 15 minutes to venture into some self care. And yes maybe 15 minutes isn't a lot, but it is better then zero! So if that 15 minutes is washing your face, reading, journaling, throwing on some color street nail polish then DO IT! Even if you don't feel like it at the moment; I promise you will feel so much better after. Taking time for ourselves as busy moms is crucial for us to decompress, feel revitalized and ready to take on another busy and sometimes crazy day. You know that saying "You can't pour from an empty cup"; I feel like us Mama's are very guilty of this and why we more than anyone need to practice self care.

Did you know that according to a survey conducted by Everyday Health approximately one-third of people visited the Doctor about something stress related, with 57% admitting they're paralyzed by stress. That is crazy; and we all know how bad stress is for our health cardiovascular health, mental health it can affect just about EVERYTHING. Stress can legit ruin your health and body. So what are some positive things self care can bring into our lives? Lets get to the good stuff!

  1. Decrease stress and anxiety. BINGO; what all us Mamas need.

  2. Better equip us for handling stress.

  3. Increase productivity.

  4. Increase overall mental state.

  5. Put you in a better mood.

  6. Increase mental clarity and cognitive function.

  7. Lastly, help you to show up as your best self.

The more you practice bits of self care a day the better you will start to feel; and in turn you'll start showing up as the bad ass Mama we all know you are. Whether it be at work, for your spouse, for your boyfriend/girlfriend, for your girlfriends, for your kids whomever. You will be showing up as a better version of yourself; the more time you set aside for yourself. Remember self care is NOT selfish!!


Now here are some simple ideas to help you Mama's get some ideas of things you can do for yourself:

  1. Go for a walk

  2. 15 minutes of stretching

  3. 15 minutes of meditation

  4. Journal

  5. Read for 15-20 minutes

  6. Listen to a podcast

  7. Read you Bible/Devotional

  8. Take a bath

  9. Mini Facial - Wash your face and put on mask

  10. Give yourself a mani/pedi - color street all the way - SO EASY

  11. Give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning to relax with your cup of coffee (Before the babies wake up)

  12. Paint while listening to music

  13. Create to do lists/get a planner (also helps with productivity)

  14. Go to bed early

  15. Take a break from social media

  16. Put on a little extra makeup or earrings and necklace

  17. Get dressed up just cuz (Your damn worth it)

  18. Bake or cook something

  19. Work out

  20. Get a massage

  21. Do some Yoga ( so good for relaxation as well)

  22. Light your favorite candle and put on some good tunes

  23. Pray

  24. Reflect and think about all the things you are thankful for

  25. Anything that makes you HAPPY!

Here are a few self-care ideas for personal development

  1. Make a list of 20 things you like about yourself

  2. Make a list of 5 things you want to improve in a year

  3. Try to write 5-10 positive things about the day

  4. Make a list of things that relax you

  5. Get comfortable saying no

  6. Get rid of toxic people

  7. Make a list of 5 feasible goals for the year

I know sometimes having time for ourselves can seem daunting, and like there is never enough time in the day; but I would like for you to at least try and see if it makes a difference in your mindset, mood, and overall well being. Also he are two of my favorite books for self help/ motivation. The first book is "The Complete Guide To Self Care: Best Practices for a Healthier and Happier You (Everyday Well Being) - This book is so good; it literally gives you a ton of ideas for self care and explains why each is so good for you! The second book is "You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness And Start Living An Awesome Life." I love both of these books and cannot recommend them enough.
